One of Those Days…

February 27th, 2008

Well, my site has been down for most of the day today. There is some irony in the fact that I was reading Jody’s post over at the Hunter’s Wife, about being cautious online,  just this morning. I am not really worried about my personal safety, so that is not my greatest concern. However, I am not nearly as cautious with my personal information as I should be. Another problem that I have had had in the past, is that I have used passwords that are far too similar for different things online.

This is what came back to bite me today. Evidently, someone was able to guess a password to one of my email accounts, accessed the account online, and sent out at least one spam message from my account. My hosting service picked it up, and shut down all of my accounts. If you tried visiting my site sometime after about 1 pm, you probably saw some nasty message about my accounts being suspended…I had violated the Terms of Service agreement, without even doing anything! They refused to open my email accounts back up until I had changed every last email password.

So, the moral of the story is: use difficult passwords to guess, and make sure that you use different passwords for different accounts and online activity. Hope you all had a better online day than I did…I had to spend over 2.5 hours on the phone with tech support and changing email addreses and passwords.

  1. I was wondering what was going on. I even sent you a message through associated content. Glad to see you got everything back up and running.

  2. Thanks Arthur! I responded on AC too, because I couldn’t get on here, or write any email!

  3. Kris – Sorry to hear about your difficult time today, however, thanks for the reminder on passwords and how easily someone can cause stress and conflict in a moments notice.

    Way to hang tough!

  4. Oh – do I ever feel for you – we had someone break into my email account when we were dating and print out messages we’d written each other and give copies to lots of people that didn’t like us and rearrange things to make them sound really bad and give the altered copies to my parents – it wasn’t fun and I felt sooo violated, since then all of our passwords are much more complicated. Glad to see you’re back!

  5. That’s a bummer. I’m guilty of using easy passwords too. I also use the same one for a lot of different things. My excuse is that I have so many passwords, between work and personal projects, that I have to remember. Still, I guess I should think about changing some of them. We don’t want to make things too easy.

Plus, I don’t want people getting in and reading my e-mails. That’s just too creepy.

  6. I’m sorry to hear that. After reading this post it makes me think that I need to go in and change all of my passwords. Glad to see you are back up and running and got everything straightened out.

  7. It’s sad to think that people don’t have anything better to do! Glad you are back up and running.

  8. I am sorry that you had such a exasperating day!! Maybe the “hacker” was a PETA or Gun Control operative! 😉 I must add that I say this in jest lest any PETA person see this and want to sue me for slander.

  9. OOPS! The aformentioned “crime” in my post would be PETA suing me for false accusations–not slander. Sorry! Now you know why I never applied to law school!!:P

  10. That’s terrible…It’s hard to believe that people can be so cruel but they can. Glad you are up and running again. You just can’t be to sure of yourself on anything anymore.
