Off Topic…

March 1st, 2008

With my last post, I started a new category entitled “Off Topic”, and I want to give you all a little more information about that topic. I have been trying to find a way to earn a little extra dough from this blog–with the intent of it paying for itself in the long run. At the same time, I want to keep it relevant to the blog’s topic, which of course is hunting, fishing and the outdoors in general.

I debated for a long time about whether to accept “paid posts” or not. On one hand, I didn’t want to do it because it is difficult to fit most of the opportunities into the context of this blog. I also did not want my readers to think that I wrote a particular thing only because I was paid to do so. On the other hand, it looks like I can cover my hosting and domain fees by only writing the occasional “paid post”.

So, I decided that I would, in a very limited capacity, write some of these posts to help with these expenses. As soon as my other blog, The Next Best Thing, is built up sufficiently, I will probably write all paid posts over there. That blog is more geared for marketing and advertising…this one is supposed to be my “pleasure blog”! Unbeknownst to me(probably because I didn’t read everything clearly enough), I have to write 10 posts for the company I am working with now before I can register another blog. It also has to be at least 3 months old, so my other blog will have to wait a little while.

I have decided to designate paid posts as “Off Topic”, so that you all will easily be able to identify those posts. If you don’t want to read them, it will give you the easy indicator to skip it. However, I am making a few rules for myself as it pertains to these posts, and you have my word on these:

  1. I will only write about things that I think my readers are interested in. If I don’t think you can benefit from it, it won’t show up here.
  2. I will be honest with my evaluations of what I write about. I will tell you what I think about a website, or product, whether good bad or indifferent. That doesn’t mean I am an expert, and I certainly value any input you have on these posts. Thanks Steven for the info you added to the last post. I am sure upon further evaluation, and more experience, other products and possibilities can be unearthed. Research everything for yourself before joining something!
  3. I will not write many of these types of posts. My plan now is to try to limit it to at most a couple per month. I have too much to write about otherwise!
  4. I will not let this interfere with my readership. Simply put, if you all don’t like it, its gone. It is not a staple of this blog, and never will be. If it appears that some folks stop reading because of this addition, I will knock it off and bury it beneath the big oak tree down by the river!

Please tell me what you think of this way of monetizing a blog. And remember, I will clearly identify each of these “paid posts” with the category of “Off Topic” so that you can easily identify it. So, from now on, if you see “Off Topic”, then you know what type of post it is!

  1. I think it’s fine – good luck with the new endeavor!

  2. I enjoy your blog! Keep up the good work! Good luck with your new blog.

  3. I think it sounds like a good idea. Making a little money is never a bad thing in my eyes, and it’s not like you are trying to hide the fact. Good luck.

  4. I don’t see anything wrong with it as long as it is on topic with your blog. I too have been going back and forth with this issue.

I believe if you have a blog and it is enjoyed and you are making money at it, I see nothing wrong with doing with it what you choose.
